Migration testing is often required to demonstrate that a material complies with the migration limits set out in food contact regulations. Migration limits in food vary depending on material and region.

EU Regulation for Migration

The EU Regulation 10/2011 sets out two types of migration limits for plastic materials, covering overall migration (OML) and specific migration (SML).

Overall Migration Studies

The overall migration limit is the cumulative figure of substances which can migrate out of the food contact material. The analysis provides a holistic overview of the substances found in the food sample or food simulant.

Specific Migration Studies

These studies focus on known individual substances, based on toxicological data. Migration testing identifies whether these substances can be found in the food sample or food simulant.

Printing Ink Migration Testing

Our experts can also undertake ink migration testing, and advise on the toxicological impact of printing inks. Smithers has significant expertise in compliance testing against both the GMP Regulation (EC) No 2023/2006 and the Framework Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004.
Migration Testing Support:
  • Identify whether your substance requires migration analysis
  • Advise on the most appropriate exposure techniques, test conditions and food simulants for your particular need
  • Undertake a standard migration test to assess your material
  • Develop a bespoke test method for substances which fall outside of the listed standard test methods.
The Smithers difference:
  • World-leading food contact testing expertise
  • State-of-the-art GC-MS and LC-MS equipment
  • In-house library of mass spectra to enable efficient and accurate contaminant identification
  • We continually invest and develop in our analytical expertise for migration testing, in response to the demand for technological innovations such as digital printing, UV cured inks, nanography and high temperature inks.
