Changes to WRAS approved components, when is additional BS 6920 testing required?

Any material in contact with the water supply in the UK must comply with the Water Supply Regulations or Scottish Byelaws. WRAS and BS 6920 have been designed to show compliance to Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations. These standards cover non-metallic materials and components in contact with water intended for human consumption.

Through a range of chemical analysis, physical assessments, microbiological testing and odour/flavour testing, it is possible to explore how a material interacts with water - and to ensure it is suitable for holding or transporting water while not impacting on the quality or safety of the water.

What happens when your material, fitting design or manufacturing processes change?

Whether by design or necessity – things may change in the production of materials and fittings. But any modifications can have important implications for existing WRAS approvals. It is often necessary to seek a new WRAS approval for the modified item by carrying out further BS 6920 testing.

In this infographic, Smithers' Water Contact experts highlight some of the most common scenarios manufacturers face where additional testing is required to request a new WRAS approval.
