Guide: The Differences Between ISO 14001 and ISO 9001

Today, more organizations are becoming aware of their environmental impact on their communities and the world around them. Initiatives that revolve around corporate sustainability, environmental social governance (ESG), and ethical sourcing have become critical components of growing businesses.

ISO 14001 certification has become a foundational element, and a great starting point, for numerous companies enacting these environmental initiatives. By implementing and verifying an environmental management system (EMS) through certification, organizations are implementing the processes and procedures required to ensure that their environmental footprint is optimized.

Like many ISO standards, ISO 14001 is based on ISO 9001, with changes and additions made that focus on environmental management. In fact, the first major difference between these two standards is that ISO 9001 is considered a quality management system (QMS) while ISO 14001 is an environmental management system (EMS). As you might have guessed, that is not where the differences end.

To help highlight the key differences between ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, Smithers assembled this guide for high-level insights and a basic side-by-side comparison of both standards.
