A close up view of plastic tensile testing, where plastic is effectively being stretched in different directions.Tensile testing is used to characterize and compare the performance of plastic materials separately in machine and cross (transverse) material directions.

The tensile properties of plastics are measured on either of two Tinius Olsen universal tensile test machines, including a hot box facility allowing tests to be made over a wide range of temperatures from -50°C to +150°C.

Standards and accreditation

Our testing is UKAS, ISO 17025 accredited to British standard BS 2782:3 methods 326A-326C for tensile strength and elongation and BS 2782:3 method 320A for tensile strength, elongation and elastic modulus.

Smithers also carry out tensile testing against International standard ISO 527 and ASTM D882.
